Artist Statement
Long Island Dream Scapes is a collection of original photographs exploring the relationship between light, color, form, and atmosphere. Through familiar shorelines, bridges, structures, and landscapes, I look for the moments when ordinary places reveal something unexpected. Black and white allows me to concentrate on shape, texture, and shadow; selective color draws attention to details that might otherwise go unnoticed. In my celestial compositions, photographs of Long Island meet my own astrophotography, connecting the places we know with the immensity of the night sky. My intention is to create photographs that invite the viewer to linger, to look again, and to discover a sense of mystery within the familiar.
The Genesis Effect
Murphy’s ongoing exploration of “Just the Right Amount of Color” has led to the Genesis Effect, a personal photographic method that builds on his selective-monochrome compositions. By combining deliberately positioned areas of color and monochrome with barely perceptible cool chromatic undertones and refined tonal gradients, he explores how subtle color can influence the apparent depth and visual rhythm of an image. The method grew from his observation of layered blue-gray and silver automotive finishes and is presented as an evolving, distinctive direction within his artistic practice. While selective color and photographic toning have historical precedents, Murphy’s particular approach reflects his own continuing experimentation. Every Genesis Effect work is based on his original photographs and edited without adding or reconstructing photographed scenery.
